250th Anniversary Celebration - Mark Your Calendar - August 24, 2024!!
We are thrilled to announce today that 2024 is the year-long celebration of the Township’s 250th Anniversary. Incorporated at the first town meeting back on March 01, 1774, Wilkes-Barre Township was one of the earliest local governmental bodies in Pennsylvania and in our country. The Township at that time encompassed all of what today is the City of Wilkes-Barre and included the rolling hills of Laurel Run, Bear Creek Township, Bear Creek Village and Buck Township.
The insignia created for the semiquincentennial of the Township of Wilkes-Barre is a product of our 250th Anniversary Committee wishing to express devotion and dedication to the place that has been called home for generations. The celebratory seal and logo is a homage to the current Seal of the Township of Wilkes-Barre, created for the bicentennial in 1974, with an expansion of time periods worth recognition, from the colonial era and the silhouette of the Native American; to the significance of King Coal and the importance it played towards the growth of the greater Wilkes-Barre Area, and then on to becoming the centralized commercial capital of the Wyoming Valley, designated by the crown jewel of the prosperous local economy, in the Mohegan Sun Arena.
We are excited to partner with the Mohegan Sun Arena PA to host a huge birthday celebration event in the Arena’s parking lot, scheduled for this summer, on August 24th where we can acknowledge the historical significance of our hometown as well as recognize the Arena’s 25 years of success and countless fond memories from all of the wonderful entertainment that has graced the stage here for our enjoyment!
For our part, we are currently working diligently with the Arena management and our 250th Anniversary Committee to make arrangements for a birthday party like we’ve never seen before, which will include a parade, food vendors, games and activities, live musical entertainment and a fireworks display at dusk to mark the wonderful occasion. The event will be free admission and everyone is invited to attend.
Additional details will be posted to our Facebook page and Township website. We would like to thank the Arena management and staff for all of their help and support as we get this exciting dual-birthday celebration planned, organized and ready to go. We look forward to marking this monumental occasion in honor of our beloved hometown.
